Are you using flash? His goal is a long time? It is the goal that block the flash?
Have I answered your question with 4 questions?

This is not "the camera and take a photo of himself." This is what the timer stops. If you use the timer to put some good light, white balance correctly, turn off the flash and the camera on a tripod or solid surface you have a photo of a few degrees above the "quality" that you are.

can be many different things .. When you are down then your face is the establishment of a shade or using flash in low light conditions, try to check the shutter speed! if more than 1 / 200, then it may be that the shutter speed is so fast and not enough light for the sensor? In general, the flash does not fire every 1 / 200 sec, try the shutter speed down and open your Aperature!

Change the camera angle, the shadow of the camera itself, perhaps.

I think Mick your answer. What is the purpose you have on? If a target is more of a shadow obtained from the lens when the flash on the board. If you are another target, a shorter, try this.
Please have a nice little trick for you. Take a photo of his reflection, but you can not, or before you go to Hugh a reflection of the flash. Set your camera at something on the mirror to about 45 degrees. Set the timer on the shutter button and go where the camera is visible in the reflection. So, for the mirror, the camera needs to form a V. If you do well you do not see the camera or flash. Try it out.

Hope that helps and happy shooting.
